Croatia

Croatia

Cities: Dubrovnik, Split and Hvar
Total Duration:
4 days
When?
Summer 2013
Flight:
60K points on United (IAH -Split and return IST – IAH with cheaper flights in between)

I just want to say that we didn’t plan this because of Game of Thrones, but still really cool to see where they filmed the show.

Tips:

  • Pack light – lots of steep steps!
  • Carry lots of cash
  • If you rent a car, make sure you know the rules of the road (we got a ticket!)

Dubrovnik  – AKA King’s Landing 😉

Duration: 2 days
Where did we stay: Old Town (AirBnB with Irena)

We had some difficulties getting here due to flight cancellations, but we finally made it by landing in Split and then driving to Dubrovnik. According to Google Maps, it should only take 3 hours to drive there but it took much longer (maybe because we didn’t know how to drive a manual! haha). The drive to Dubrovnik was on winding, coastal roads, so it takes longer than you’d expect (5-6 hours). If you do decide to drive, there aren’t street lights on the coastal roads and you may run into some wild boar!? (Road To Hell)

Take a bus. I’d recommend taking a bus (Croatia Bus), but be careful if you are travelling alone. If you are lucky enough to get a bathroom break, make sure someone on the bus knows to wait for you or the driver will leave!

Walk the City Walls. Once we finally got to Dubrovnik the place was GORGEOUS. Still can’t believe how the people of Croatia wake up to the blue crystal waters of the Adriatic everyday (I’m never going to Galveston again). You’ll get the best views of the city and the water if you walk the city walls – Definitely don’t miss this!

Go to a cliff bar. We stopped by Beach Bellevue, but there are cliff bars where you can dive right into the water like the locals or use the “pool ladders” that are attached to the rocks.

Split

Duration: 1 day

Go to Krka National Park or Plitvice Lakes National Park. Unfortunately, couldn’t make it here since our flight issues, but both parks look amazing and the locals highly recommended them!

Visit Diocletian’s Palace. Split was the largest city in Croatia we visited. We strolled around Diocletian’s Palace and the Farmer’s market.

Hvar

Duration: 1 day
Where did we stay: AirBnB Hvar

Hvar is an island off the coast that is a popular party spot. Celebrities go clubbing on the island. To get there we took a ferry from Split (~1 hour). We only had a day to chill around the island, so I’d suggest lengthening your stay. One of the highlights of our trip was watching the Croatia World Cup match with the locals. Croatia won so you can imagine that sight in the streets!
